A Pick-Me-Up for Those Hard Times

At some point in everybody’s life, they are going to reach a point where they hit rock bottom (and if they don’t, then they are missing one hell of a learning experience). This happens differently for everyone, whether it is losing someone special to them, or falling upon financial ruin. Every person’s battle is different, and no one’s struggles negate the struggles of someone else.

However, the important thing to remember is that these moments are not what is going to define the rest of our lives, no matter how bleak it might seem at the time. This writer’s not going to tell you some cliched line about how the night is always darkest before the dawn, but things do get better. That’s just the way life works. Nothing lasts forever, not even the bad times. Here are some tips about how to get through the hardest times that life throws at you…

A Pick-Me-Up for Those Hard Times

Take it one step at a time

The first thing to remember is that you can’t solve everything at once. When life piles problem after problem on your back, you can’t dump them all at once. Indeed, usually that means that you are only running from your problems, which is no way to live. Instead, just take one step at a time. For example, if you are going through a bankruptcy and a divorce, you just have to handle what you are able to, first, and then get to the next problem. Overwhelming yourself at this delicate stage is only going to make everything much more difficult, later down the road.

Understand that bad times creep up on you

Oftentimes, when people reach the lowest and hardest times in their life, there is a strong amount of guilt that only makes everything a lot worse. Indeed, sometimes the situations that we find ourselves in are situations that we got ourselves into. However, nobody ever wants to be at rock bottom. Usually, the worst of times are the ones that sneak up on us; the things that we could have never imagined. Even things that we enable ourselves, in the beginning, are usually problems that we don’t expect later down the road. For example, when it comes to addiction, nobody expects to become an addict, and once you are one, it is difficult to quit without help.

Stay positive

This is probably the hardest piece of advice to follow on this list. There’s nothing more difficult than imagining a breath of fresh air when you are drowning. However, these times in life are usually the times when it is most important to stay positive. This is because you need to know that you are going to be okay at the end of whatever you are struggling with. This doesn’t mean pretending that everything is okay and nice and dandy, but it does mean that you are going to place yourself in the best position to fix your problems.

Find an outlet for frustration

It’s hard not to beat yourself up when you feel like you’ve allowed the chips to get so low in your life, but don’t so is only going to make things worse. The key to remember is that you have to find anyway to keep yourself and get back on a better trail. This means that you need to find a constructive way to deal with the frustration that you are feeling on a daily basis. Whether it means taking up a new type of physical activity (like a team sport) or finding an outlet of artistic expression, you need a way to let off steam that is going to help you relax without causing problems for yourself and your situation.

Let go of what you can’t control

Whatever happens, one of the biggest tricks to relieving stress is to simply let go of what you can’t control. Sometimes things happen that suck. Sometimes it’s not going to be fair, the things that happen to you and those that you love. That’s life. Let go of the things that you can’t control, and you’ll find that you will be able to navigate through life with much less frustration and doubt.
