Eastern State Penitentiary Review

Eastern State Penitentiary

Since it’s Halloween, I thought I’d share with you about a prison tour I recently took.  While on vacation in Pennsylvania, we stopped at the Eastern State Penitentiary.  It was opened in 1829 as part of a controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through “confinement in solitude with labor.”  Some of America’s most notorious criminals were held here including Al Capone.  After 142 years of consecutive use, Eastern State Penitentiary was completely abandoned in 1971, and now stands, a lost world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.  Where I’m from, we have the Famous OSR – Ohio State Reformatory and I will say that I didn’t think the Eastern State Penitentiary was as creepy as OSR is.  It seemed to me that Eastern State Penitentiary was more of a forgiving place compared to OSR.  I mean, you can see the cell that Al Capone called “home,” and it looks more like a studio apartment compared to a prison cell!  None-the-less, this is an amazing place to see while in the area.  It’s very handicapped accessible, unlike most abandoned prisons.  If you’ve never taken a prison tour then this is a great place to start due to it being so well lit, open, and oddly enough…welcoming.  :)
