It is nearly Christmas time. I bet your house is already decked out in all things Christmas.
If you have had a new addition to the family over this last year, this Christmas Holiday will even be more exciting. And what better way than to whip up a beautiful custom baby onesie for your little one’s first Christmas.
It is really easy to apply HTV vinyl to clothing. And the beauty is that if you don’t have a heat press machine yet, you can always use a normal home iron to apply the design.
Here is a simple step-by-step tutorial to walk you through the process.
Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Heat Press a Custom Baby Onesie
Find below the step-by-step tutorial on how to create a custom HTV transfer for your baby onesie.
- White Blank Baby Onesie
- HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl or Iron-On Vinyl)
- Vinyl Cutting Machine
- Weeding Tool Kit
- Heat Press Machine or Iron
STEP 1 – Choose a Christmas SVG File
The first thing you will need to do is to buy a good quality white baby onesie – fortunately these are really easy to come by and don’t cost much.
Next, go on a hunt for a fun Christmas-themed design or image that you want to apply to your onesie. You can find loads of free SVG files that are ready to download and use online.
I used this FREE image that you can download here.
Next upload your design to your vinyl cutting machine’s software. I absolutely love using my Cricut Explore Air 2 (In my opinion, it is the best vinyl machine), so I simply upload my design to their software: Cricut Design Space.
If you don’t own a vinyl cutter yet, you can pick up some fabulous deals by grabbing a Cricut Air 2 bundle. These bundles typically include your vinyl, tools and machine.
STEP 2 – Get your Design Ready
Upload your file to the software and resize it to fit your onesie.
Next make sure to mirror-flip your image.
That way the image will be the right way up once we apply it to the onesie.
STEP 3 – Cut the Design onto your HTV Vinyl
Next load the HTV or Iron-On vinyl into your cutting machine and cut out your design.
STEP 4 – Weeding the Image
It is time to weed the image. Simply grab one corner of the HTV vinyl and gently start peeling away the excess vinyl from your mat.
Next pick up your weeding hook and simply pick away all the smaller vinyl pieces that has remained in your design.
STEP 5 – Apply the Design with a Heat Press
Next, you will need to apply heat to the vinyl in order to get it to stick to your onesie. You can do this with an iron, an EasyPress or a proper heat press machine.
We recommend you use either the Cricut EasyPress or a heat press as it will take the guess work out of the application. Here is a guide that will help you find the best heat press machine for your budget.
Simply follow the instructions on your HTV packet to set the temperature and time required to press your design onto your baby onesie.
Carefully peel back the carrier sheet and you will have a beautiful custom Christmas onesie for your little one.
Now you are ready for that very first Christmas with your baby.
