According to Upwork’s 2018 Future Workforce Report, 38% of hiring managers predict that their employees will work predominantly remotely in the next 10 years. Many people seem to think that’s a dream come true compared to a traditional in-office position. And while working remotely does have quite a few benefits, it’s certainly not for everyone. If you’ve recently started part time or full time telecommuting, you should know that finding the right balance is the key to success. Here are just a few tips to help you develop a healthy lifestyle as you begin your remote working journey.

Find a Designated Space

First, it’s important to designate a space to be your in-home office or working area. This space should be quiet and out of the way of other activities that may be going on at the same time in the house. Make sure there’s a clear separation in this space, and get it set up with all the resources you’ll need during your working hours.

Try to avoid the urge by keeping your work foods separate yet accessible and easy to grab and get back to work. Pretzels and peanuts are a great option. And don’t forget how easy it is to grab some fresh veggies from your fridge — try some baby carrots, broccoli, or any other type of microgreens, a tiny form of edible greens produced from very young vegetable, herb or other plants. And don’t forget to stay hydrated by keeping a reusable water bottle next to your desk and filling it up during breaks.

Spend Time Outdoors

Finally, don’t let your new remote working lifestyle cause you to spend less time outdoors. Studies have shown that levels of several organics average two to five times higher indoors than outdoors, and when inhaled they can contribute to several health problems. If the weather permits, try to fit in a short walk before work or during your lunch break. At the very least, make the most of the comfort the natural weather conditions provide by opening a window near your work area and letting the wind and sunshine through.
