Tips on sharing the news that you’re expecting a baby

Finding out that you are pregnant is the start of an exciting journey that means your life will never quite be the same again. Some people choose to announce their news with a bold gesture, while others prefer to do so more discretely. Whichever way you decide, here are some considerations to bear in mind.

When to tell

Although many women like to wait until the start of their second trimester – by which time the risk of miscarriage is substantially lower – before making their news public, the chances are that some of your nearest and dearest may start to suspect you are pregnant long before this.

Changes in behavior such as no longer drinking or giving up coffee and other caffeinated products are a dead giveaway, but even if you manage to hide these, there will be changes in your body too. At 10 weeks pregnant, for example, the average fetus is only about the size of a strawberry, but your uterus will have grown to around the size of a large grapefruit, meaning you’ll have the beginnings of a visible baby bump.

Holding back on your announcement for too long is likely to make people think you are unhappy about your news, so it may be an idea to come clean earlier than you plan.

Telling your boss

While you expect pretty much everyone you tell about your pregnancy to be delighted for you, there is one person you may be dreading sharing the news with: your boss. The good news is that, according to one researcher, while more than three-quarters of all the women she interviewed on the topic were worried about having such a conversation, only a tiny proportion ended up having a bad experience.

Just how difficult the conversation is likely to be will depend on your plans during and after your pregnancy, but make sure you take the time to work out all the fine details of how much maternity leave you will be entitled to and what benefits you can expect when you return to work. This will ensure you have all the information you need to make the best decision for you and your baby’s future.

Creative ways to tell

Breaking the news to your partner provides plenty of opportunities to have a little fun. One woman wrote a message inside a fortune cookie, another compiled a grocery list comprised entirely of baby carrots, baby back ribs, baby peas and similarly named items until her husband cottoned on. The only limit is your imagination.

Thanks to the growth of social media, you can now tell extended and family your news all at once with just a few clicks. The best such announcements often end up going viral and being shared on social media around the world. Take the case of Todd Krieg, confined to a wheelchair since a dirt bike accident. When he and his fiancé, Amanda Diesen, learned she was pregnant, he couldn’t help using the moment to make a slightly risqué comment. Their announcement shows Amanda holding up an ultrasound image of the fetus while Todd sits in his wheelchair, giving a thumbs-up and grinning.
