Shine by Jodi Picoult book review

With the last few books that Jodi Picoult has released, she’s been releasing ebook original short stories on Amazon that goes along with the full length story she’s about to release.  I tend to enjoy these short stories, but this one I’m not so sure about.  Yes, it’s a prequel to her novel Small Great Things, Shine tackles issues of race and privilege in this story about Ruth Brooks.

The story starts out by being Ruth’s first day of third grade at Dalton, also known as the prestigious institution on New York’s Upper East Side, which couldn’t be more different from her old school in Harlem. Despite being the smartest girl in her grade, Ruth suspects that her classmates and teachers only see the dark color of her skin. She also notices that Christina, the daughter of her mother’s employer, treats Ruth very differently when they’re hanging out with the popular girls rather than playing together by themselves.  Quickly, Ruth wants to fit in like the other girls as she navigates between two worlds.  Her mama and grandmother try to talk her into never losing sight of the dreams she has for herself just because of what everyone else is doing and how they’re acting.

I don’t know if there’s enough of the story to make an impact…I feel like it was definitely short (as it’s made out to be), but I was looking for e bit more “meat” in the storyline.  Shine by Jodi Picoult did get me to read the next book, Small Great Things…
