I had really wanted to see this movie as I’ve slowly become a fan of Miles Teller and most of the movies he’s been in (Divergent Fan alert). However what I didn’t know about this movie, was how intense that it was. I didn’t know much about it, only that there was a kid who had a mentor that helped him with his drum skills…that’s all. Boy are you in for a great movie if that’s all you are aware of too!
Now many people will say that the “mentor” was an inspirational teacher, however that’s now how I would describe him. :) J. K. Simmons plays the role of said teacher who teaches at a prestigious NYC school of music (think Juilliard). Miles Teller plays a drummer as gifted as he is ambitious. Students try to get the attention of Simmons’ character, but without much intention, Teller’s character is overjoyed when he does, but then rapidly realizes the coveted experience will also be brutal. Simmons is known for screaming at students, slapping their faces, and flings chairs. He also finds their weakness and tears at it without reprieve. Teller’s character ends up practicing for hours upon hours until blood gushes from his hands.
The acting is incredible on all levels. Why this movie didn’t win more awards is beyond me. I was impressed with Teller and how he displayed vulnerability, because his other roles were not as intense as this one. As for Simmons, he’s not just the guy in the insurance commercial. He poured everything he had into this role — so much that you begun to hate him immediately.
I’m not positive this is a family-friendly movie, but it’s definitely a good one and one to for sure see at least once!
